MLB Trade Deadline: A team-by-team look at the buyers, sellers, and owners before July 31st

Buy . The D-Backs need a shortstop and a catcher. It is very important to address the needs of the two premium positions, despite a mediocre farm system, so they may need to concentrate on just one of these priorities. Buy . While the Braves were linked to a number of third-party bases, Johan Camargo was more than solid. If the Braves Camargo give in, maybe a third baseman should be on the list. Really, the great need for relief assistance / improvements is. Sale . Manny Machado and Zach Britton are off the board, so the Orioles should get fully involved in rebuilding at this point. The best pieces the Os have left are the pioneers Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman. Jonathan Schoop was also the subject of trade rumors. Buy . The Sox are Locks for the playoffs and are well on their way to ending up with the best record in baseball. That is, they could use extra rotation depth, a second baseman, and perhaps a plug-in in the catcher. Buy . The Cubs are not desperate for anything, but another arm in the rotation ̵
1; preferably one who deserves a playoff start – should be on the shopping list. Sale . The White Sox are a bad team trying to get out of a rebuilding. As such, they should try to find buyers for people like Jose Abreu, James Shields, Avisail Garcia and any number of relievers. Sale . Matt Harvey has made modest progress on Cincy's watch, and he seems likely to be at the mercy. Scooter Gennett could make the Reds the biggest loot, but he could be part of their long-term plans. The Reds are sure to arouse interest in their aid arms – including Raisel Iglesias, David Hernandez and Jared Hughes. There is also an outfield swamp, maybe Billy Hamilton or Adam Duvall going elsewhere. Buy . The troubled Cleveland Bullpen was approached, but they could still use an outfielder with launch caliber and perhaps a reverse-turn depth piece. . Although the Rocky Mountains invested heavily in the bullpen last season, it was a disappointment. Add one or two new arms to the mix. A bat able to play first and an outer field blanket might also be okay. Sale . Michael Fulmer is her best trade chip, but his oblique injury means he has nowhere to go. Elsewhere, Nick Castellanos, Mike Fiers and Leony's Martin were the subject of rumors. Hold . The defending champions are of course stacked. Any registry failures that you think you can find are not important and they are best addressed internally. At most they could use a left-hander. Take the rest of the week, Jeff Luhnow. Sale . Mike Moustaka's power and capable glove in third place means he will be in demand, and super-utility man Whit Merrifield has also seen his name. Lefty Danny Duffy also stays on the radar. Hold . GM Billy Eppler has done a very reasonable job despite a thin farm system and tight budget. Things have not gone as hoped for in Orange County. You can argue that they should turn at the deadline, but why not hold the band together for another year? Mike Trout's summit will not last forever, but by 2019 he should still be intact. Buy . Of course, the Dodgers have already made the biggest splash with their addition of Manny Machado. However, to position themselves as the team to beat in the NL, they need to add some Owen help. Sale . They have not made strong returns on their start field in offseason trades, so their work is not complete. Dealing All-Star Catcher J.T. Realmuto should be a priority as he made the Marlins a real viewing platform. Relievers like Kyle Barraclough, Adam Conley and Drew Steckenrider should also be mobile. Buy . The brewers have a number of needs, and these needs are even more pronounced in light of their recent struggles. GM David Stearns will probably not be able to fill any gaps, but GM David Stearns would probably like to make a shortstop (no, Tyler Saladino is unlikely to sustain it) and a starter pitcher. Sale . A return trip to the postseason is a long time, so it's time to open the doors to business. Veteran baseman Brian Dozier has been at the center of trade talks for some time, and Eduardo Escobar could bring them even better results. Starter Kyle Gibson is a strong opportunity to be treated, and veteran relievers Fernando Rodney and Zach Duke can also find a market. Sale . Jeurys Familia has already been dealt, but why stop there? Noah Syndergaard's illness can make it difficult to persuade him to leave for the August retirement period, but the Mets should buy Jacob de Grom. DeGrom's excellence and years of control mean he can land a franchise-modifying package for the Mets. That's what they need. Elsewhere, Asdrubal Cabrera, Devin Mesoraco, Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz are also worth buying. Buy . Go out and fix the rotation, Yankees. Yes, the Zach Britton trade makes their power package even lower, thus reducing the burden on the starters. That means they still have to pitch. Sure, it can be a deep piece, but they also have the controllable resources to make a big splash – should such a name be made available. A first baseman may also be worth pursuing. Hold . They added an elbow arm that was wise and the rotation numbers to become much healthier in August. That's enough to justify the rest of the way. . If the Phillies fend off the Braves and maybe the Nationals in the NL East, then they may need to be active until July 31st. Like many others, they could use bullpen reinforcements, but the real need could be to upgrade to one or both positions on the left side of the infield. Hold . The pirates have recently quarreled again, but they do not make a name for themselves as postseason teams. Therefore, it does not make sense to swap prospects for a failed run in the playoffs. Let us see where that goes by keeping the current roster intact. Sale . Brad Hand and Adam Cimber are in exchange for an impressive return, so let's move on. There are more bullpen for sale as both Kirby Yates and Craig Stammen should be in high demand. Starter Tyson Ross is another potential chip. Hold . The Giants are unlikely to go into the playoffs, but they're a little too close to second place on the wild card to justify tearing them off. There are just not enough young talent to spare to reach a true impact trade goal. . You have to start throwing. Their farm system is not the strongest, so they may be limited to medium supplements. Hold . According to the SportsLine projection model, the Cardinals have little less than a one in five chance to make the playoffs. That's high enough not to sell, but it's low enough that upgrades to the stretch drive can not move the needle enough. Keep the roster intact in case they go under late summer and next season under a manager named Mike Matheny. Sale . The Rays have exceeded expectations in 2018, but they are too far from the playoff position to be considered competitive candidates. It's time to trade this long-established Chris Archer. The search for Nathan Eovaldi and Sergio Romo should also be on the to-do list. Wilson Ramos's thigh injury means he may need to be shopped during the August waiver period, provided he is healthy by then. Sale . Cole Hamels has to leave, and they should try to find a buyer for Shin-Soo Choo. The Rangers are reportedly not going to act Adrian Beltre, but otherwise they should move any veterinarian they can. Relievers Keone Kela, Jake Diekman and Alex Claudio should arouse interest. Sale . Josh Donaldson and J.A. Happ is the subject of trade rumors (Donaldson's calf injury means he will be traded earlier in August), and Yangervis Solarte should also have a market. The Phillies are connected to Curtis Granderson, and Seung-hwan Oh is certainly agile. . Oh, why not. It's Bryce Harper's year, of course, and the Nats have behaved as if they were embittered. They have been the MLB's most disappointing team so far, but they have not been buried yet. They need a catcher and preferably one that is controllable beyond this time of year. Do what it takes to be J.T. Realmuto removed from the Marlins.
