The search for a missing student from the University of Iowa ended on the 26th of July on the eighth day. The investigators examined the technology, including its FitBit, and continued the search in the area where it was last seen. Mollie Tibbetts, 20, disappeared from Brooklyn, Iowa, where she sat at her friend Dog's house. She was last seen jogging on Wednesday evening, July 18, and sent messages from her phone to her boyfriend and mother later that evening. She was missing after she did not come to work in a day camp on July 19th.
Authorities have stated that they treat the disappearance of Tibbetts as a case of a missing person, but have not ruled out a kidnapping. Brooklyn is a city of about 1,400 people in East Iowa, halfway between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. The congregation gathered around Tibbetts family as the weekend search continued, posters were distributed and flyers distributed.
Her family said she would never go offline and run. Mollie would never run away, I talked to her last at 7:30 pm Wednesday night, what was dinner, I told her brats, she said, "Okay," her mother Laura Calderwood told KWWL-TV Her aunt, Kim Calderwood, told Des Moines Register, "It's frustrating; it is powerless. We break our heads and think about what we can think of to tell the investigators. It's the worst thing … trying to fix something you can not fix. "
Tibbetts is 5 & 3" tall and weighs 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She may have been wearing running clothes, gym shorts, running shoes and sports bras or high school sports T-shirts, or she was wearing work clothes, denim shorts and a red T-shirt. Anyone with information is requested to call the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office at 641-623-5679.
Here are the latest updates in the investigation:
Authorities Receive FitBit Data They Hope They Will Assist in the Investigation
The FBI has joined the investigation with state and local authorities. In recent development, authorities have indicated that they have received FitBit data from Tibbetts device. Her friend, Dalton Jack, said that Tibbetts, an avid runner, wore the FitBit all the time. A FitBit is a wearable activity tracker that uses wireless technology to measure data such as the number of steps taken, heart rate, sleep quality, incremental steps, and other fitness metrics. The FitBit could also track the location using GPS.
Authorities have stated that they are investigating Tibbetts' devices, including FitBit and their phone, along with their social media, email accounts, and other digital activity. Mitch Mortvedt, deputy director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said that they were able to obtain data from the FitBit that would be useful for the investigation but that, according to the Des Moines Register, did not contain any information about that data "We get back lots of information from this process and we're very hopeful with the electronic data we get back," he told the newspaper. "We rely heavily on the FBI because it is an ever-changing technological world, adding that with each passing day, kidnapping becomes a major opportunity and tells the paper," We have not excluded anything, but It's been a week, so it's always more suspicious. "
Mortvedt told CNN about using the FitBit data:" This is a new arena for us. That's one of the reasons we called the FBI. It's probably also pretty new to her. I do not know any other case here in Iowa where we specifically used Fitbit information. "
He told ABC News," For a 20-year-old who is missing and completely off the net, social media, cell phones, banking, that sort of thing – it's obviously a very suspicious and very serious matter. "It's very well networked through social media, mobile phones, and exercise equipment, so we're obviously trying to use that to our advantage to get information we can."
Poweshiek County Sheriff Thomas Kriegel told ABC News, "We believe that there will be some useful information [from the Fitbit data] but [we are] unwilling to share this."
Mortveldt told the Cedar Rapids Gazette that the Investigators have received data from several previously filed search warrants. "It's been described to me as a huge amount of data coming from our search commands and we do not have a real-time framework for how long it will take to sort everything out, but it will take a while."
He added We send people everywhere when tips and leads are developed Nobody has been detained Numerous people have been interviewed and investigators have conducted several interviews while they were there, but no one has been detained.
He told Gazette they were "hopeful that the data will be useful, but it's too early to say so."
Tibbetts boyfriend was expelled as suspect
Police said on July 25 that Dalton Jack, Mollie Tibbetts's friend, is not a suspect in this case and cooperated from the start. Jack, who has been with Tibbet for almost three years after getting to know each other in high school, was in Dubuque, Iowa, with his brother and his brother's fiancé on site. He works for the construction company of his brother. Jack is considered one of the last to hear from Tibbetts. He said she sent him a Snapchat photo at around 10pm.
Dalton Jack told WOI-TV that he remains optimistic and believes that Tibbetts will soon be home. Nobody in the world, not her family, not me, nobody would ever have thought she'd just leave and tell no one about it. "
Jack said to them ABC News: "She probably has Fitbit because she never takes off her. She uses it for the sleep tracker and for all her runs and everything, "he said." She probably has her cell phone, but it's either dead or dead and we tried to call it obvious, and it goes straight to Voicemail. "
Her cousin, Emily Heaston, said the police ransacked the house where Tibbetts lived." Everything is just there where she left it. Wallet, laptop, everything else was fine, where she put it last, "Heaston told KWQC-TV.
Heaston said Tibbetts was looking forward to her sophomore year and planning a trip for next week." Mollie did Just asked me this week for furniture for their apartment in school for the upcoming academic year. She had planned a trip to the Dominican Republic for the next week, "Heaston said she was" like a sister "to Tibbetts, the news channel said, adding," I'm trying not to imagine the worst, but me I am so afraid that someone has taken her. "
Tibbetts mother told ABC News that her daughter's and her boyfriend's visit to the Dominican Republic is for his brother's wedding." She and her boyfriend Dalton got ready to Traveling to the Dominican Republic on August 2nd to attend Dalton's wedding, "Laura Calderwood told ABC News." As this date approaches, it's like approaching me because I think of these two people who marry, who were also very close to Mollie. [It’s] should be the happiest day of her life.
