(WCMH) – Torrent Pharmaceuticals extends the voluntary recall of certain blood pressure medicines to traces of a cancer-causing chemical.
Torrent only remembers many losartan-containing medications that contain NDEA, above the now acceptable limits of 0.27 parts per million (ppm).
The FDA also updated the list of available losartan drugs. There is also a list of medications that are not remembered.
The recall is the latest in a series of recalls that began in July, which the FDA refers to as "unacceptable" levels of N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA).
According to the National Institutes of Health, NDEA is a suspected human and animal carcinogen used in gasoline as a stabilizer for industrial materials and as a lubricant additive.
The FDA says that patients who have withdrawn go back ARB should take the current medicine until the pharmacist discontinues replacement or the doctor prescribes another medicine that treats the same condition. Some ARBs contain neither NDMA nor NDEA.
