Mosquito-borne virus found in Indiana



According to health agencies, some insects and animals in northern Indiana have detected a rare mosquito-borne virus that has killed other states. According to the Indiana Department of Health, three horses and one cat have been diagnosed with an Eastern equine encephalitis accumulation of mosquitoes in Elkhart County. No residents of Indiana were diagnosed with the virus. The virus can cause brain infections. This year several people got sick with the disease. Deaths were reported in Michigan, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. According to health authorities, the best protection against mosquito bites is to use DEET as a repellent and to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially at dusk, when mosquitoes are most prone to stings.
