PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) – Rhode Island officials say for the first time this season that mosquitoes have been tested positive for the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.

State Environmental Management says the virus was found in samples collected on June 1

1 in Pawtucket, Warren and East Providence.

Alan Gettman, coordinator for mosquito control says it is unusual to find the virus so early. He says mosquito samples from the same areas have been negatively tested last week.

Rhode Island is also testing mosquitoes for West Nile virus that has not been found yet.

Connecticut and Massachusetts reported this week to find West Nile virus in mosquito samples.
