A mother and her five children died in a fire at a motel in Benton Harbor, Michigan, according to authorities. The Berrien County Sheriff's office told CBS News that the 26-year-old mother and her children between the ages of two and ten were killed in the fire at the Cosmo Extended Stay Motel.
Early Saturday there was not a word tomorrow what caused the flame.
CBS South Bend affiliate WSBT reports that a 2-year-old is hospitalized and treated for injuries. Officials said several other people were also taken to the hospital.
At the time of the fire 27 motel rooms were occupied. The police said the whole motel was affected.
WSBT reports that they spoke to a man who believes the fire could have started in his room.
"When I woke up, my bed burned, I said," Oh my god. "I got my sheets and wet them and I tried to throw them on the bed and when I put it on the bed Bed threw, it did not work, "said Leroy Johnson, who lives in the hotel. "So I asked the person over me for some salt, and when I put salt on it, I hurry up and jump out, and as soon as I jump out of the hole, space explodes."
The Sheriff Department of Berrien County initiates an investigation into the fire and the State Fire Marshal will also investigate.
