Mother charged with 1-year-old son died in Hurricane Florence

MONROE, N.C. – The mother of a one-year-old who was swept into the flood caused by Hurricane Florence was charged with the death of the boy. The Union County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on its Facebook page that Charlotte's 20-year-old Dazia Ideah Lee is being sued for negligent homicide and driving on a closed or unopened highway.

"The tragic death of this child and the circumstances of this case are heartbreaking," Sheriff Eddie Cathey said in the statement. "We continue to pray for all those who suffer as a result of the death of this child, but after a very thorough investigation and taking into account all the facts and the application of the law, we consider this charge appropriate."

Authorities said: Water from a rain-swollen stream pushed Lee's car off the road and left her hanging in a cluster of trees on the night of September 1

6. Lee said she could get Kaiden Lee-Welch out of the car, but the water caused her to lose her grip.

That night and the morning his body was found, several police teams searched for Kaiden.

Lee told news agencies that she was not from the area and unfamiliar with the streets. It is due in court on November 20.
