KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) – The nine climbers who died during the worst catastrophe on a mountain in Nepal in recent years were the first South Koreans to climb all 14 summits of Himalaya over 8,000 meters without additional oxygen.
The rescuers had cleared the mountaineers' bodies on Sunday after the weather. The body of one of the leaders was brought to his village while the eight others were flown to Kathmandu.
"It was the worst mountain disaster in Nepal in recent years and an unimaginable one," said Rameshwor Niraula of Nepal's Mountain Sports Department (19659005) Niraula said officials still collected details about what exactly happened but were described by the saviors the mountaineers overturned by the explosion of blizzard-like wind conditions. The member of the climbing team had fallen ill and was in a village far below the base camp during the storm.
It was the deadliest landslide disaster in Nepal since 2015, when 19 people were killed by an avalanche in the base camp of Mount Everest – an earthquake that devastated the country. The previous year, an avalanche over Everest Base Camp killed 16 Nepali Sherpa leaders.
The Himalayan range includes all 14 peaks in the world that are over 8,000 meters high, and only a few dozen climbers have successfully climbed. Kim achieved his performance in 2013.
Santa Lama of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, who helped coordinate the rescue, said that since all nine people in the camp were killed and no surviving witnesses, it was difficult to say what exactly happened or when ,
The mountaineers also tried to climb a 7,193 meter high peak, which is not one of the highest, most difficult or most popular mountains in Nepal.
The bereaved family members gathered at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Nepal's capital, where the bodies were to be autopsied before being handed over to their families.
The South Korean Ministry told reporters that strong winds during the storm blew the victims from their base camp in front of a steep cliff. On Saturday morning, the news of the destruction got out and helicopters were sent off. They could not land because of the persistent bad weather, but they discovered the bodies found on Sunday.
You were given permission to climb the summit during the autumn climbing season. Spring and Autumn are the perfect climbing seasons in Nepal between the harsh winter and summer monsoons.
