NASA is finally building a long-delayed futuristic space telescope

The James Webb telescope feels right now.

NASA

The Next Generation James Webb Telescope had a hard time but NASA was able to take a big step forward this week as engineers joined the two halves of the Observatory.

Joined at a Northrop Grumman facility in Redondo Beach, California. Engineers used a crane to mount the telescope together with the other main component, a combined spacecraft and a sunshade. Together, they will be part of a mission to explore and map the cosmos and take over where the Hubble Space Telescope ends.

NASA shared several views of the trial on Wednesday. The shiny mirrors of the telescope really stand out. The two halves are physically interconnected and the engineers are now working on the complicated tasks of making electrical connections.

The Hubble Space Telescope which was launched 29 years ago still works, but is getting old and struggling with technical issues . Scientists are looking forward to accessing the data collected by the more powerful James Webb.

James Webb was originally scheduled to be launched in 201

8, but was pushed back several times while some serious cost overruns occurred. It is now planned to go into space in 2021 . This latest milestone makes us all hope that NASA will actually meet this deadline.
