NASA is looking for participants to be isolated in a Russian laboratory for 8 months



NASA is looking for U.S. citizens to conduct an eight-month social isolation study to prepare missions to Mars and the Moon. Research is being conducted to examine the effects of isolation and containment as participants work to complete simulated space missions.

Participants will spend the night in a laboratory in Moscow and experience environmental aspects similar to what astronauts expect from future missions to Mars with crew members from different nations.

However, not everyone can apply.

NASA is looking for healthy people between 30 and 55 who speak English and Russian fluently. You must also have an M.S., PhD., M.D. or have completed training as a military officer. NASA will consider other participants with a bachelor’s degree and other qualifications such as military or professional experience.

Participants are compensated and there are different salary levels depending on whether you are connected to NASA.

This study builds on a four-month study from 2019. In the SIRIUS-19 analog mission, six participants – two Americans and four Russians – were isolated in a metal living space that served as a spaceship, lunar lander and home. NASA hopes to better understand how long space flights and longer exposure to isolation and containment will affect astronauts on upcoming Artemis missions and eventual trips to Mars.

Artemis is NASA’s program to land people on the moon again by 2024 to prepare for a possible trip to Mars.

“Social isolation is a very important area of ​​research for us,” said Thomas Williams, scientist for Human Factors and Behavioral Performance. “It is associated with a higher level of stress and influences physiological and psychological well-being.”

NASA hopes that what they learn will improve the health and performance of astronauts traveling to the moon and beyond.
