The image was InSight's Instrument Deployment Camera, which is about two-thirds of the lander's 1.85 meter long arm. This five-fingered, powered gripper is essential to the $ 850 million success of the InSight Mission, which seeks to map the interior of Mars to unprecedented levels of detail. The rider will use the claw to place his two main scientific instruments – a warming heat probe and a series of seismometers – directly on the red dirt of Elysium Planitia. InSight will also provide thermal and weather protection over the seismometers, which are so sensitive that they can detect seismic waves with the amplitude of a single atom.

The stationary lander is unwilling to commence these discharges until after two to three months after landing, NASA officials have said. The mission team would like to thoroughly study the InSight environment for a while to make sure that they have selected the right deployment points and have sufficiently mastered the crucial steps. This exercise will be conducted with a test lander at the mission's home base, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. (The magnifier is for emergencies only if InSight needs to do some landscaping to make it easier to deploy.) The members of the mission team said they did not use it.)

The measurements that InSight will take next Martian year ((almost two years on Earth) should help scientists understand how rocky planets generally shape and develop, said NASA representative.

Elysium Planitia is located approximately 550 miles (550 miles) from Gale Crater, the self-sufficient Curiosity Rover of NASA Exploration since August 2012. Curiosity was a very supportive older brother who greeted InSight on Mars and congratulated the lander on important milestones (all on Twitter, of course).
