NASA will announce early next month the names of the astronauts assigned to the new Boeing and SpaceX commercial crew capsules. NASA will announce the crew's first flight tests and missions on the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX Crew Dragon on August 3, marking a new era in US spaceflight, the space agency said Thursday. 19659006] The agency will also announce the crew missions for the crew flight tests and the first recertification for Boeing and SpaceX, in a press conference chaired by Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator. In 2014, NASA teamed with Boeing and SpaceX to develop the Starliner spacecraft on an Atlas V launch vehicle of the United Launch Alliance and Crew Dragon on the Falcon 9.

Starliner and Crew Dragon will launch American astronauts on American spacecraft from American soil to the International Space Station for the first time since NASA discontinued its space shuttle program in 2011.
