NASA's experimental supersonic X aircraft, which it hopes will help commercialize supersonic travel over land, is officially known as the X-59 QueSST moving forward.
The US Space Agency has said that if it can "lower sound waves to a low rumble," commercial jets might be able to make the overland journey from New York to Los Angeles in the future in 2 hours. Already in May, NASA Lockheed Martin has awarded a contract for $ 247.5 million for the construction of the experimental X-Plane.
NASA announces that the US Air Force informed them on June 26 of its decision to designate the experimental supersonic aircraft with an X number name. The term "X-plane" continues a tradition of naming important experimental aircraft and rockets that dates back to 1
" For everyone working on this important project, it's great news and we love the name, "said Jaiwon Shin, NASA's deputy administrator, in a press release.
" I'm confident that the contributions that the X-59 QueSST will make to our nation and the world will secure their place among the largest ever flown NASA X aircraft. "

The Space Agency says the aircraft is currently under construction with Lockheed Martin in California Once the X-59 Que SST has been fully tested and is considered safe in national airspace, NASA says it will launch "supersonic flights over selected communities in 2022 to measure residents' responses."
NASA says the design of the X-Plane is based on a Lockheed Martin preliminary design that will make a plane 94 feet long with a wingspan of 29.5 feet and a full-tank weight of 32,300 pounds.
Once ready and ready for flight, the space agency says the aircraft will cruise at an altitude of 55,000 feet at 940 mph, and that its maximum speed will be a projected 990 mph with a pilot in the cockpit.
Inside, the X-plane will have a single General Electric F414 engine, which is "the engine used by F / A-18E / F fighters.
After the flights take place via active communities, NASA says the scientists will collect data and responses that they will submit to US and international regulators who will then use this information to "help on the basis of noise levels."
Supersonic flights are usually not over Land allowed The results of these tests will recommend new standards as a replacement for existing restrictions. The space agency has in recent years focused on supersonic overland flights with the X-59, the Low-Flight Boom demonstrator, the all-electric X-57 aircraft and the Acoustic Research Measurement test flights among others.
"This 'X-plane' would open up a new market for US companies to get faster e to build commercial aircraft, create jobs and halve overland flight times, "says the white house get read for the 2019 fiscal year.
"The budget also increases funding for research in flight at speeds more than five times the speed of sound, commonly referred to as hypersonic hypersonics research is critical to understanding how manned and robotic spacecraft safely enter the planetary atmospheres and spacecraft Hypersonics also has applications for national defense.
