National Prescription Drug Withdrawal Day Saturday, April 28th

Local law enforcement agencies want you to take the opportunity to be proactive this weekend and help them fight drug abuse by getting unwanted and obsolete prescription drugs out of your home.

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Several local districts are organizing community-wide events where residents can drop off medicines they no longer need or drugs that are outdated. The event is a safe, convenient and anonymous way to dispose of drugs while educating the public about the potential for abuse, as statistics show that addiction can sometimes start with prescription drugs.

The pages are open from 1

0 am to 2 pm Saturday, April 28th.

Clermont County is home to three sites, including one in the sheriff's office. Chief Deputy Chris Stratton says the event is free and easy.

"You can bring the original medicine containers in. We ask them to peel off the label or take a Sharpie and scrape off their information and if they wish you can throw the drug into the containers." Stratton said

Most Circular and city police departments have permanent large tanks in their lobbies called drug drop boxes. Clermont County reports that residents give up 15 to 20 pounds of unwanted drugs a week. The medicines are weighed and finally disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

The guidelines for permanent drug testing kits and routine for national drug taking are the same.

The sites accept pills, capsules, blister packs and medication patches. You will not accept liquids, syringes, glucose needles, inhalers or medical supplies.

"It's progressing, it's the most responsible thing for the environment, curious kids at home, not necessarily teenagers trying to abuse them, but also kids sorting through the garbage," Stratton said.

To find a town or county near you that has a permanent drug box, go to the drug agency's website and click on their collection point and simply insert your zip code. Click Here for the Link
