Netflix is insatiable: Alyssa Milano responds to fat-shaming backlash

Netflix's Newest Dark Comedy Insatiable is accused of burning fat – but star Alyssa Milano insists that the series actually tackles the issue head-on.

The series follows former Disney favorite Debby Ryan as a high school student named Patty, who was relentlessly victimized over her weight. After an incident causes her jaw to be wired in the summer, Patty shows up on the first day of her last year and looks different – and retaliates after someone who is mean to her.

After the new trailer was released on Thursday, the film faced a fierce backlash. Critics accused the show of fat-shaming and called it "disgusting", "lazy" and "toxic".

Milano, who plays the wife of Patty's lawyer and her beauty The electoral coach enthused that the show was fighting the problem of bullying and did not want to make it any longer.

"We do not shame Patty," she writes. "We're dealing (through comedy) with the damage caused by burning fat. I hope that clears up."

It then refers to an article in Teen Vogue about the show.

Ryan did not directly address the backlash, but she also referred her to Twitter supporter to the article Teen Vogue and published a screenshot of a highlighted section that reads, "If Returning to school, all are stunned by their physical change Problematic You bet If somebody's treatment of you finally roots from what your body looks like, that does not say a lot about you Patty is anxious to let everyone pay for how they treated them (even if you really should let karma handle the malefactors in its good, sweet time). "

The author and executive producer of the show, Lauren Güssis, describes Patty as inspired by her own "formerly bullied teenager".

"I really had the feeling that it was important to [bullying] look directly at it and talk about it," says Güssi's Teen Vogue . "I hope that if I put out all my pain for humor, at least I will make one feel less alone, hopefully many people will laugh like" Oh my God, I laugh because I do tell. I do not laugh about it, with which I laugh.

Insatiable Premieres on Netflix on August 10.
