Neuronal stem cells that grow from blood could revolutionize medicine

Stem Fatale

Physicians could soon breed new brain cells that would help treat people with stroke or other neurological conditions with just a small sample of blood.

Scientists at Heidelberg University Hospital and Heidelberg University The University of Innsbruck in Austria has discovered how mature human blood cells can be reprogrammed into neural stem cells. Scientists have reprogrammed stem cells before, but these new cells are the first to multiply and propagate thanks to specific genetic changes in the lab, as research by Thursday's Brain Trust [3] revealed

The scientists hope that their results will improve regenerative medicine, a type of treatment in which new cells regenerate the body. In particular, the neural stem cells could either grow to the neurons found in the central nervous system or to the glial cells that support and protect these neurons. Both could help treat people who have survived strokes or who have been diagnosed with neurological conditions.

Previous research that reprogrammed cells into stem cells was never so useful in a medical context, as these cells could not multiply and sometimes tumors were called teratomas, according to research.
