The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with free agent quarterback Cam Newton, who brings in the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player to help the team switch from triple MVP Tom Brady, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The one-year contract is worth up to $ 7.5 million with incentives, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss it. A spokesman for the patriots said the team had nothing to announce on Sunday evening. The signature was first reported by ESPN.

7;m as excited as I am not what !!” Newton posted on Instagram “All praise to God !! Drop content tomorrow !! I hope you’re ready !! Let’sgoPats.”

The patriots had gone to training camp with heir of Brady, heir to Brady, who inherited the fourth round in 2019, who had led the team to six Super Bowl championships since 2001, but signed this off-season at Tampa Bay. Stidham appeared in three games last season and completed two passes for 14 yards with one interception.

The only other seasoned quarterback on the defending AFC East Champions squad was 34-year-old Brian Hoyer, who has started 38 games in an eleven-year career with seven NFL teams, including two Patriots.

Newton is a three-time Pro Bowl selection that was the league’s best player in 2015. He remains the NFL leader in touchdowns run by a quarterback. He still had a year to sign a $ 103.8 million five-year contract, but the Panthers saved $ 19.1 million below the salary limit by firing him on March 24.

The 31-year-old Newton was number 1 in the 2011 draft after leading Auburn to a national championship and winning the Heisman Trophy. He helped the Panthers reach the playoffs four times, including the 2015 Super Bowl.

The Panthers finished 15-1 this season and Newton won the league MVP honors after throwing 3,837 and 35 touchdowns and rushing 636 yards and 10 TDs. But he was criticized after Carolina’s 24:10 loss to the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl for not jumping on a loose ball late in the game and stopping his post-game press conference.

After missing the postseason 2016, the Panthers returned after an 11/5 win the following year and lost to the New Orleans Saints in the wildcard round. More problematic was that a shoulder injury significantly hampered his throwing in 2018. After starting 6-2, the Panthers lost their next seven games.

Newton underwent surgery before the 2019 season to repair a broken rotator cuff. But he injured his foot in a short appearance in the third pre-season game against New England. He only played two games last season before being transferred to the injured reserve with a Lis Franc break.

Newton has since rehabilitated and published several training videos on Instagram. But because of the corona virus, he had no opportunity to meet other teams to show that he was healthy.

In nine seasons, he completed 2,371 passes for 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns with 108 interceptions. He also ran for 4,806 yards and 58 points.
