VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – New proposals from Resort City's vice-mayor may change if short term rentals and Airbnb are allowed.
The new proposed rules come a few weeks after Virginia Beach City Council postponed the vote on another version of the 60 Day Rules
The new rules would have three overlay districts in Sandbridge, the Oceanfront and the North Create an end. Houses there can have short term rentals without special permission. You must continue to adhere to the city's standard short-term rental rules. Homes in Other Parts of the City Would Require Conditional Use
"I think it would be a bad move for Virginia Beach," said Shawn Brown, who lives in the Lynnhaven district and rents a townhouse down the street, living on Airbnb , He said his neighbors do not mind and he had no major problems.
Brown started hiring Airbnb a year ago to make up for the cost of buying a bigger house. His clients are typically business people or families visiting the area. They prefer short term rentals because they can go shopping and cook instead of constantly taking away. He believes that the majority of Airbnb and short-term rentals are so. The wild parties are the exception rather than the rule.
"Come and see how often you do not even know the Airbnb, because it's unimpressive, very, very much," said Brown.
On the other side of town in Baylake Pines, Larry Horvarth said his picturesque neighborhood on the Chesapeake Bay is being compromised.
"I do not want to be here because it's like having a bunch of strangers for you all the time," Horvarth said. He spoke of one of the worst experiences he had with short term rentals. "They did a fireworks display at 3 am and kept going ̵
For this reason, Horvarth likes the idea of a craving permission for conditional use
"I think that's an excellent thing, because these are residential neighborhoods and these short-term rentals are business," said Horvarth.
City Council has postponed the vote until May 15.
