Publisher BlitWorks and developer Mossmouth gave fans their first glimpse of "Spelunky 2" on Wednesday in a new gameplay trailer.
"Spelunky 2" is a sequel to Derek Yu's critically acclaimed 2008 Rogue-style platformer and it looks as soul-destroyingly challenging as its predecessor. It has new locales, monsters, traps and items, but it also includes a number of new features like rideable mounts, liquid physics and online multiplayer. It's also visually reworked, and sections now have a second layer that adds a third dimension to the player.
But in essence, "Spelunky 2" does not differ significantly from "Spelunky," Yu said in an interview on the PlayStation blog. He sees sequels as extensions to the previous games and said he wants the fans to intervene and feel like they're playing a sequel, both in the storyline and in the mechanics.
That does not mean he does not think about new players.
"My philosophy has always been to win new players by making the world more interesting and inviting, rather than focusing on tutorials and things like that," he said. "Spelunky" is still "Spelunky" and it will be very challenging – I hope new players will hold out because we made the effort worthwhile "Spelunky 2" have very strong family and friendship issues, and I want new players to feel cared for, even if we put tough obstacles in their way. "
" Spelunky 2 "will come to PlayStation 4 and Steam sometime next year. Fans can watch a demo at the Sony booth this weekend during the PAX West 2018.
