In what year was the first ball dropped on New Year's Eve?
The first ball drop celebration in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907, to greet the year 1908. The ball was made by immigrant metal worker Jacob Starr, who made a 700-pound creation of iron and wood with one hundred 25-watt incandescent lamps.
Since then, with the exception of 1942 and 1943, when tradition was common, more and more elaborate balls were lowered each year because of World War II.
What does this year's New Year's Ball look like?
On Thursday, workers began installing this year's ball, a 12,000-pound sculpture designed by Waterford, the CBS New York Crystal Company. The creation consists of 192 crystal triangles and sparkles with 2,500 individual pieces of crystal illuminated by multicolored LED lights.
The theme of this year's New Year's Eve ball is "The Gift Harmony," said Tom Brennan, a Master of Waterford.
"So when I think of harmony on a personal basis, it's all about the balance of the mind, the body, the soul," he said. "If you do that at the same time, you have everything ready for you and you are ready to conquer the world."
