NFL Draft: 49ers choose Notre Dame OT Mike McGlinchey

Prior to the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night, the 49ers had two capable offensive offensive capabilities.

And now they have three.

In a slight surprise, the 49ers used the No. 9 pick on Mike McGlinchey of Notre Dame, a three-year starter and two-time captain who finished his decorated career by making 39 straight launches and All-American awards first team in 2017 received. 19659057] The selection was a hit for McGlinchey, who played both positions in college. By the time he spoke to the 49ers on Thursday, he had not been in contact with the team two months earlier, following a formal interview with the NFL.

"I had no idea," McGlinchey said. "It's definitely a shock."

The decision was somewhat unexpected given that there is no pressing need for Pro Bowl to eliminate Joe Staley and put Trent Brown on the list.

However, Staley will be 34 before the season opener. And Brown is the last year of his contract, rehabilitating shoulder surgery, and was followed by weight issues that inspired questions about his involvement during his four-year career.

McGlinchey's selection raises questions about Brown's future

Unlike Staley, who recently received a $ 6.4 million increase over the last two years of his contract (2018-1919), Brown has not been granted a contract extension granted. On Monday, General Manager John Lynch said there was no "urgency" when asked if he could possibly bring years into his business. On Thursday, Lynch was asked about the opportunity to trade with Brown.

"They never never say," Lynch said, "but now we're excited to have a lot of competition at this point."

It would be a major displeasure if McGlinchey is not the season-opening starter with proper tackle.

Unlike Brown (6-foot-8, 355 pounds), McGlinchey (6-8, 309) is a prototype of Shanahan's outdoor training. That puts a lot of emphasis on offensive lineman movement skills. In his nine seasons as an offensive coordinator, Shanahan's five primary right tackles had an average weight of 311 pounds.

McGlinchey was the second offensive lineman to be selected after guard Quenton Nelson, his team-mate at Notre Dame. And he's the latest offensive piece the 49ers have added to support quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who signed a then $ 137.5 million contract in February. The only major 49ers free agent signings were offensive players Center West Richburg and Jerrick McKinnon.

In the face of Reuben Foster's legal problems, many observers anticipated that the 49ers would select Alabama in the linebacker Roquan Smith, who became the Bears at No.8 when available. However, Lynch claimed that "Mike was the type," even if Smith was on the board.

"That's just a premium position in this league," Lynch said. "And there are not many great out there, God has not made any big offensive attacks, they are limited, we think we've found a man who has the opportunity."

Lynch also mentioned McGlincheys immaterial Values. Among the 60 who polled the 49ers in the combine, Lynch said McGlinchey and another player are the most impressive.

"He has a special presence for him," Lynch said. "He's real, he's authentic and he's a bad ass and we like that."

The 49ers were not alone in their feelings about McGlinchey, who was "likely" to be ranked 10th by the Raiders the NFL Network. After the 49ers made the selection, Oakland traded with the Cardinals and selected UCLA at number 15 with Kolton Miller.

The 49ers won a coin toss with the Raiders for number nine on the combine. And this litter, handled by Hall of Fame security Rod Woodson, allowed them to beat McGlinchey from their Bay Area counterparts on Thursday pick up.

Lynch said, "Thank you, Rod Woodson."
