The former Eagles defensive back Jaylen Watkins signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo . This comes nine days after the San Francisco 49ers invited him to visit.
The 49ers need to improve their depth in the cornerback, and it looks increasingly likely that this will come through the NFL Draft 2018. Together with Watkins brought the 49ers LaDarius Gunter, who again signed with the Carolina Panthers. The 49ers were expected to invite Delvin Breaux to visit, but there has not been a word since.
There are still many free agents who can offer solid competition and depth. However, such signings are unlikely to take place until May, or possibly even the start of the training camp at the end of July, until the OTAs begin.
The cornerback class is pretty deep this year, so a day could be two or three pick where the 49ers eventually find someone replace Richard Sherman. In the meantime, they continue to play veterans.
