Nick Saban confirms that Alabama is ready for a quarterback fight – if you can call it that

ATLANTA – There's 44 at the start and Nick Saban would not oblige Jalen Hurts to play Louisville at the season opener.

"I have no idea," Saban said Wednesday SEC Media Days 2018. He quickly added, "I expect it to be there."

This is not binding. This is also the best news Alabama has received regarding the # 1 offseason history. Why For it's 44 days to kick-off

If Hurts – the supposed loser of the starting quarterback job in the second year – transferred Tua Tagovailoa – he would have made it. Most players change after the season or spring training.

That's why I asked the question of Hurts' immediate future during Saban's appearance, aptly in the College Football Hall of Fame. The answer to act # 1

of the sport stays in the air like a doggie kick.

"I think the number one thing you want to talk about

is the quarterback controversy that you would like to create

that you've already created and that you'll be able to continue

" Saban told the media. "I'll tell you the same thing exists there, it's still going to be clear who will play quarterback for Alabama."

Aside from the admonition, it's time to read between the lines. There [Wednesday was some clarity Wednesday. As a reminder, Tua Tagovailoa vs. Jalen Hurts became one thing shortly after Tua – as a freshman – punched this game-winning pass against Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Saban has done little to solve the situation – at least publicly.

Now the topic becomes a simple convergence of time and space. Time is running out and Saban has to fill this place in his roster.

The newly adopted Redshirt rule is the best thing that quarterback controversy ever happened. The NCAA now allows players to participate in up to four games without losing a year of eligibility.

It's not hard to imagine Saban hitting Hurts (and his family): Stay, get your degree, get some game time and have another two years to claim this season. (Hurts is on his way to graduating in December.)

"There are likely to be some opportunities that could benefit a veteran," Saban later told me. "I did not overlook that, I've been asked a lot today, I've tried to avoid that, because I really do not want anyone to think that has anything to do with how we deal with anyone." Players we have, except the best guy. Nobody says that Saban is not going to be the best. "Hey, if Hurts hits Tua, good for him."

The point is that Saban needs the two best boys when Hurts leaves and Tagovailoa is injured, the next best option is Mac Jones – the Redshirt freshman who has no experience on the field.

You better believe that Saban thought of that, can you hear a dynasty creaking in the distance? April Saban suggested that he could play both quarterbacks .

"Sometimes I feel like both boys can contribute," Saban said, "maybe there's room for it." [19659002] It's time to decide that Hurts will stay in a sort of role in Alabama, so much has already been decided.

Unless that's really the main problem, the presence of Hurts on the roster is the most important thing, if all of us Tagovailoa as an appetizer, Sab would to run on a rope without hurts as a replacement.

Nobody said it was not complicated. Tua basically missed spring training with a hand injury. That allowed Hurts to get more reps. How do you downgrade a child who is 26-2 starter with a national title ring?

First, because it's Alabama, the country's toughest competing Fortune 500 company. Or something similar.

Tua is better athletic than Hurts. This last sequence in the CFP title game showed you everything you need to know. When Tua was in the front row in the second double-superior, he was fired for a 16-yard loss. Inexcusable. In second and second place he started the perfect, epic, game-winning pass to Devonta Smith.

Hurts would probably have thrown it away instead of being fired. Clever. But Hurts probably would not have thrown that perfect pass either.

Here we see why Saban is in this situation at all. We can argue about who could persuade Saban to deal with the spread. (Ahem, your turn, Lane.) We can not deny that this move allowed him to stay at the top by recruiting (more) elite offensive players.

"We will create a role for one or both of

these guys in our team and they will all have to make a decision based on what that's what

theirs is the future, as you know, in Alabama, "said Saban.

After Wednesday, I think we know what their future is in Alabama. Give or take a seat on the depth map.
