Alabama's harsh fall camp peaked on Wednesday when it was revealed that American Dylan Moses suffered a knee injury requiring surgery. Moses is the heart and soul of tidal defense.
Earlier in the fall camp, Alabama also lost the older start-line defender Joshua McMillon due to an injury at the end of the season.
In Moses' absence, true rookie Shane Lee is now the starter of the middle linebacker. The 6-0, 246 pound supporter signed with Alabama in the 2019 class, and he was rated a 4-star prospect and was ranked number 5 within the nation's linebacker by 247Sports Composite rankings.
In McMillon's absence, the true rookie Christian Harris will be the starter. Harris also signed for Alabama in the 201
Yes, Lee and Harris are two very talented young men linebackers, but replacing the experience of Moses and McMillon is brutal. Moses is the quarterback of the defense and their leader.
Other things Saban said on the SEC's teleconference on Wednesday:
- He was very pleased with the progress of our fall camp team and was looking forward to taking part. You never know what you have until you get onto the field.
- To Dylan Moses: Dylan was injured yesterday and had a knee injury. It requires surgery and it will not be there for some time. We will do everything we can to help Dylan and the people who will take Dylan's place.
- To the QB of Duke: He is an excellent player, very athletic. Passable, they have very good passport concepts. He can run, very effective with these things. We will face a man with a double threat and have to play him as a runner and a passer-by.
- With Moses and McMillian calling the defense, there will be a "crash course" for them: I think that's what we do every day. We try to get these guys ready. The guys we have as backup linebackers are good students of the game. Sometimes there are guys who are not focused when they are not the type I think there is no substitute for experience, and now they can apply their knowledge and experience.
