"Boy Erased" with Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges follows the true story of a Baptist family struggling with homophobia.
"I married very young, but it was definitely not a force for me – it was protection," Kidman writes in an essay published in the latest issue of New York Magazine on Women and Power.
She continued, "I married with love, but being married to an extremely strong man prevented me from being sexually harassed, I would work, but I was still very much in cocoon."
Kidman, 51, and Cruise, 56, started a whirlwind romance after meeting on the set of the 1990s "Days of Thunder." The co-stars said "I do" this year and adopted two children.

Their marriage took place more than a decade later in the year 2001, but Kidman says her relationship is still hard to discuss.
"Being married to Tom Cruise at the age of 22 is something I am always reluctant to talk about because I am now married to the man she is my great love (Keith Urban) and it feels almost irreverent, "she writes ( K idman married the country singer in 2006 and they have two daughters together.)
But the star of the "Big Little Lies" says she was forced to "grow up" after separating with Cruise in her early 30s would have.
"Of course I had #MeToo moments," she reveals. "Do I want to expose them in an article? No, do they come out in my work? Absolutely."
Kidman continued, "I am open and raw, I need my source of experience and emotion tapped – and I'm not just talking about sexual harassment – I'm talking about loss, death, the whole gamut of life But it must be from the right people so it will not be abused again.
