Here's an unexpected but welcome addition to the weekend: Nissan and Italdesign have teamed up to create a special edition GT-R. The first collaboration between the Japanese automaker and the Italian design house GT-R50 is a custom prototype celebrating 50 years of both Italdesign and GT-R. The stunning piece of 710-hp artwork lets us ask: why did not these guys work together the whole past half of the century?

The GT-R350 is instantly recognizable from the production GT-R thanks to the heavy, golden grille bezel and long, thin LED headlamps. Change its facial DNA. The prototype also enjoys a redesigned power-bulge bonnet.
On the way back, the GT-R50 gains a sleeker profile as the roofline has been lowered by more than 54mm. The roof itself has a shallow channel in the middle and gives it a clearer appearance. The "samurai blade" air outlets behind the front wheel arches were lengthened and trimmed in gold.
We would say that the GT-R50 really differs from the GT-R, the shiny "liquid kinetic gray" body of the flanks and the roof, which acts as a kind of hull surrounding the even more glamorous "Energy Sigma Gold "bodies around the tiny windshield and the newly shaped rear bezel. This gold field is underlined by the prominent adjustable rear wing. The roofline also extends deeper, in almost-fastback style, and the taillights enjoy a three-dimensional look, appearing like two pairs of rings hovering on a sea of gold. Even the normal Nismo powertrain would not be enough for this radical anniversary car, so Nismo pulled a page out of the GT3 playbook and increased the performance of the 3.8-liter V6 engine to 710 hp and 575 lb-ft. Engine Mods include the addition of twin GT3-specified high-flow turbochargers, upsized intercoolers, higher-flow fuel injectors and a heavy crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and bearings. The six-speed dual-clutch transmission has also been strengthened to handle all this power.
Nismo has also extended the performance suspension system with a steplessly adjustable Bilstein DampTronic I damping system. The GT-R50 rides on 21-inch wheels rolled in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with 255/35 R21 front and 285/30 R21 rear tires. The bright red brake calipers of the Brembo brake system wink at the spectators from the inside out.
The performance-oriented interior uses a blend of Alcantara and Italian leather on the seats and two different carbon finishes around the instrument panel, console and doors. Delicate gold accents reflect the golden accents of the exterior. A customized Alcantara steering wheel with carbon hub and spokes complete the picture.
If you believe this could be a glimpse of a future GT-R, Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan's senior VP of Global Design, dispels this notion: "Although this is not the next GT-R, it's an exciting celebration two anniversaries in a provocative and creative way – wrapping around one of Nissan's best engineering platforms and Japanese designs with Italian coachbuilders. "
