No tsunami threat for Hawaii from a big quake off Papua New Guinea

A major earthquake off Papua New Guinea did not cause a Pacific tsunami, officials said in Hawaii late in the morning.

The earthquake hit Hawaii at 7.25 am around 11.25 am About 196 km south-southwest of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, in the South Pacific, at a depth of about 6 miles

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said the quake did not trigger a tsunami that would threaten Hawaii However, "dangerous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter along the coasts of Papua New Guinea."
