Weeks of wet weather in western North Carolina saturated ground there even before the arrival of rain from Subtropical Storm Alberto, meteorologist Linda Lam said.
"Alberto then brought additional rain showers that triggered several landslides in West North Carolina Tuesday through Wednesday," Lam added.
More rain is expected on Thursday. Wheeler said that two vehicles were swept away at about 21:30 pm near a swollen Ivy Creek Wednesday. A vehicle and its individual inmates were rescued by rapid-fire rescue teams, but the two inmates of the other vehicle remain missing.
At least 10 water rescues have been carried out in this area by teams of the Albemarle County Fire Rescue and Lynchburg Fire Rescue, Wheeler said. A local emergency was declared by officials of the Albemarle County . Schools in the county were also closed due to dangerous conditions reported WVIR-TV.
