Norwich alderwoman opens about opioid addiction news

NORWICH, CT (WFSB) – A woman talks about her drug addiction to save lives.

Who this woman is can surprise you.

"I trusted my doctor and my pharmacist," said Joanne Philbrick, Norwich Alderwoman.

A 75-year-old grandmother may not be the person you believe has a drug problem.

But Joanne Philbrick is open and honest about her opioid addiction. [19659002] "I was never high on oxycodone, so if I took the pills, it would mean I could do things like a vacuum," Philbrick said.

She is also an elderly woman in Norwich City.

This week, she went public at a council meeting with her addiction. 1

Her doctor prescribed oxycodone for 84 pills for a week.

Philbrick said she took only one or two a day, far less than the prescribed 12 a day

"She said," Mom, there's something wrong with you. "I told her which medication I took and she said," You are addicted to drugs. "I said," I'm not addicted. "said," They take drugs and are addicted to them, "said Philbrick.

Her daughter noticed that she had problems with words and felt sick.

" She went to the emergency room. The doctor asked what medications I take. I told him oxycodone for my femur and he said you would go through with the withdrawal, "said Philbrick.

An addict who goes through the withdrawal, hard to believe and even more surprising.

" He said further the normal protocol is methadone, inpatient treatment. But he said there are, unfortunately, no beds for the elderly, "said Philbrick.

Nowhere, she made it cold at home.

Philbrick knew she needed to cure her addiction, she had to get rid of the pills. [19659002] She took her to Norwich police for fear she would take her away.

Many police have containers where they can dispose pills around the clock.

In 2015, 729 drug overdoses on CT died, 90 percent of all overdoses are related to opioids.

This number has increased year by year.

Since November this year, 866 people have died with 150 outstanding tests.

Recovery was hard for Phil- brick. [19659002] She lost 40 pounds in just three weeks and now needs a cane to get around, but has a strong message.

"I hope a person will be saved and prevented from doing so I am ashamed or ashamed. For families who support the pharmacies, they have created this problem, "said Philbrick.

She is recovering step by step.
