NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) – Life on Mars: If it's not already there, it seems it's soon on its way. A NASA competition to design what people will live on the Red Planet. One of the winning teams comes from New York: AI. SpaceFactory, an architecture and technology company.
AI. SpaceFactory accepted NASA's challenge for a Mars habitat that needs 3D printing. With the fuel costs of sending everything to Mars, it has to be built with materials found there.
Team leader Jeffrey Montes said the designers modeled the elements found on Mars to develop their habitat called Marsha. The main challenges they had to deal with is how the pressure on Mars works differently. When you are on the ground, the pressure is external – we really feel it when we move to the bottom of a pool. On Mars, the pressure inside is like soda in a shaken can. That's why their shapes are similar.
Forget about the domes you see in movies. Marsha's four stories can house four "Marshans", I suppose they will be named. They will probably live and work and play there for a long time.
The habitat is built even before the arrival of humans. The team at AI. SpaceFactory designs a robot that will be sent to Mars to print Marsha in advance. Team Marsha will spend the next year tailoring a robot for a demonstration on Earth to see if NASA sends it to Mars.
