Oakland AMBER Alert: ABC7 News receives surveillance video on carjacking after father was accused of making a false police report

OAKLAND, California (KGO) – The suspicion of raiding a vehicle in Oakland with a 3-year-old girl has led to a startling turnaround. The case triggered an AMBER alert for the child.

Now the police in Oakland have arrested the girl's father for lying to officials, hoping to get his car back faster.

ABC7 News received a surveillance video from Saturday night, in which a suspected car thief gets into a silver Mercedes outside in front of a liquor store at International Blvd. in Oakland, while the owner was inside.

Seconds later, the Mercedes starts, the owner runs after the stolen car behind in the traffic.

The car owner told the Oakland Police that his 3-year-old daughter was sitting in the back seat of the car.

The case triggered an AMBER alert.

The car was recovered hours later after it crashed into a bus stop on San Pablo Avenue. In El Cerrito, the suspect was arrested, but the child was not inside.

Police say this is because the child was never in the car. She was home and safe with her mother.

The father was arrested for making a false police report in the hope that the police would find the Mercedes faster, according to the authorities.

"I do not think that's right, I feel like there are other ways to get your car back," Tadaysha Dewalt said.

Dewalt, who lives in Oakland, can not believe the story.

"I'm glad Baby is safe, that's the most important thing baby was not in the car," Dewalt added.

The identity of the child's father has not been released. It is unclear whether the police contacted the child's mother before she exhibits the AMBER Aert on Saturday.
