"My opponent Denver Riggleman, Corey Stewart's teammate, was caught in a campaign with a white racist," wrote Cockburn on Twitter. "Now he has been exposed as a supporter of bigfoot eroticism, which is not what we need on Capitol Hill."

This tweet and a subsequent tweet contained screenshots of Instagram posts showing Bigfoot with "censored" bars.

Riggleman, a Republican, military veteran, and handcrafted distillery owner, said Cockburn misinterpreted his book "The Bigfoot Mating Habits," which he described as a "long-running prank" with his friends. He said the book is a parody of an anthropological study.

"It has nothing to do with bigfoot eroticism," Riggleman told USA TODAY.

The back and forth went viral and searches for the term "Bigfoot eroticism", which increased by 8,000 percent at Pornhub.
