Last summer, OnePlus has released its flagship travel backpack in addition to its OnePlus 5 flagship smartphone, and this year the company is set to revive with the upcoming launch of the new OnePlus 6T and OnePlus Explorer backpack. I just got the 18L Explorer for review, and that's a big departure from the existing OnePlus case. Slicker, smaller and more stylish, the Explorer is obviously an effort to appeal to an image-oriented audience. I would say that OnePlus also wants to go up on a higher price, but the company has not yet announced the pricing, which makes the evaluation of the bag itself impossible.
Still, here's what I know of a couple of days of use.
The explorer is all about his side pockets. There is one on the front where you can store quite large items such as a charger, a pencil case, and your phone and headphones. Then there is the laptop compartment on the back, which is also accessible from the side, and right next to it is a mini side pocket, designed to hide your passport, purse or, again, phone. The main compartment can be reached by lifting the flap and opening a zipper that exposes the top and a side in the shape of an L. And then there's a ventilated pocket right at the front that suits for an umbrella or a sweaty gym T-shirt
I have an immediate problem with this bag, and it has to do with the fidlock snap that's the top Flap holds in place. It's magnetic, like that on the Boundary Errant backpack, and it's just as frustrating. If you do not fill the bag with something that gives it an inflated shape, it's almost impossible for the snap-clasp to make a proper contact on the first try. The redeeming quality, I think, is that I do not have to open much of the main room with this bag, thanks to the large front pocket and the rear laptop compartment, both of which are directly accessible.
The Explorer backpack will be available in either a nominal green color that looks mostly gray (pictured above, with an orange accent at the front pull tab) or a plain black. The exterior is made of water-repellent Cordura, and the one zipper that is exposed to the elements also has a water-repellent seal. We should know the full price and release data at the same time that OnePlus brings the OnePlus 6T to market.
