OnMail is a new privacy-oriented email service from the company behind Edison Mail



OnMail is a new email service from Edison (the company behind Edison Mail, one of the better email apps out there). It is described as “the first permission-based email service” to solve modern email problems like endless spam and annoying email from brands. It is Edison’s most ambitious attempt to fix email.

Edison has been working on achieving similar results with his apps for years, but there is a limit to the possibilities that it really offers when it acts as a mediator for other email services. Hence OnMail: a new email provider to compete with juggernauts like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook and others.

The biggest feature is the OnMail “Permission Control” system, which is based on the idea that just because someone has your email address doesn’t mean they can send you an email. When you receive an email from a new contact for the first time, OnMail filters it into a separate field and gives you the option of accepting or blocking it. The idea is to build on the existing unsubscribe and block features that make Edison so good, and stop spam before it even reaches your inbox.

OnMail also promises a better search experience based on natural language. So if you search for “Julia’s attachments from last week”, you’ll see emails that match this prompt without having to use Gmail’s more complicated search strings. The company also promises that OnMail will automatically block read reception without disabling images, support for larger attachments, and more.

OnMail offers both paid and free versions of the service, although the company has not specified the differences between the two. And, like the Edison Mail apps, OnMail users have the option to share anonymized data with the company (which Edison uses for research products to provide free services). However, this level of data sharing is apparently optional, and Edison promises that OnMail will not offer advertising or read receipts “at any level” of the service.

OnMail is slated to launch later this summer. However, interested parties can register on the company’s website in order to be able to access it early.
