A measles outbreak is spreading in a Washington district known for not vaccinating its children, and health officials have declared a public health emergency.

According to the county health department, at least 18 other sites were identified on Saturday in Oakland County that may have been exposed to measles.

On Thursday, the department had a list of more than 25 published exposure sites between 14 and 20 March. The additional sites will postpone exposure to March 21st.

There were at least five confirmed cases of highly infectious disease and three other suspected cases. Health officials said an infected Israeli traveler may have spread the virus during a visit to Oakland County from March 6 to 13.

People are urged to be alert for symptoms 21 days after possible exposure, symptoms include:

  • High fever (can reach over 104 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, the Zahnf leish and the jaw f of the mouth (Koplik spots) two to three days after onset of symptoms
  • A rash that is red, sublime and patchy; usually begins on the face, spreads to the trunk, arms and legs 3-5 days after the onset of symptoms
