Over 200 tombstones with swastikas in the Illinois cemetery

GLEN CARBON, Ill. – More than 200 tombstones were sprayed overnight with swastikas in a cemetery in Illinois, reports CBS member KMOV. Police were summoned to Sunset Hills Cemetery at Glen Carbon on Saturday morning after the discovery of black spray paint

The cemetery is the resting place for more than 1300 veterans. Officials are working to clean up the vandalism prior to a Memorial Day event on Monday and to plan to wash the gravestones to clean them.

This is the first time that the cemetery has been destroyed, the cemetery owner KMOV said, but he is still considering installing surveillance cameras on the property.

The police were also called into a nearby neighborhood after local residents found the same spray paint houses and at least one vehicle.

The Edwardsville Police Department released a video on Facebook that featured snapshots of a potential suspect. They said they were investigating and asking anyone with information to call them at 61

8-656-2131.
