A new official Canon Overwatch short story has been released. Valkyrie, written by veteran narrative and story designer Michael Chu, talks first-hand about Mercy, who deals with the role she played in the Overwatch organization after it disbanded. The short story seems to be settled shortly before the game starts and builds on a story event in the game, with which you can win a new mercy costume.
We've worked through the story and summarized the key facts below – stop now if you want to read it without a spoiler.
The story begins with Mercy remembering her parents who volunteered to work in a hospital in Switzerland during the Omnic crisis and were killed by an air raid. One day when she was still young. The story leaps to Mercy as an adult working in an auxiliary camp outside the gates of Cairo. She's been there for two years and ended her term as head of medical research for Overwatch when the organization collapsed some time ago. Her reputation was shattered when Overwatch was dissolved, and she traveled to Egypt to help, because Overwatch was "responsible for much of the country's suffering." He tracked her down because she desperately needs healing. Mercy and 76 have a heated discussion about the state of things ̵
The story returns to Mercy and 76's first meeting, triggered by Mercy's research on nanobiotic healing (which says that the story has nothing to do with nanobot technology). We get some insights into Mercy's research background and how it was made, with the promise that it will develop healing technologies for use outside the battlefield – which of course is not exactly the case.
Back in the present, the trio is shaken by an explosion at the nearby Anubis facility, and a hesitant mercy attaches to the other two in their Valkyrie suit to aid Talon Defense. In the heat of battle finds Mercy Hanan, a young girl who lies in ruins and recognizes her as mercy when she uses her healing staff. Soon she too has to save Hanan's brother, who is trapped in a collapsing building.
During the rescue attempt, a mortar hits the building and Mercy's suit is badly damaged. She manages to rescue both children as the building collapses and is captured while the building collapses around them. But 76 comes back for them, and ultimately everyone survives. Subsequently, Ana and Ana tell Mercy that they are leaving to continue chasing Reaper, who was responsible for what happened that day. Mercy does not go with them, but as she continues her work, thinking about saving the two children and how excited they were to meet Mercy, she begins to reconsider the value of working with Overwatch.
The recently announced Overwatch 2 promises much more.
