The 29-year-old waiter was killed Friday night in Noisy-le-Grand, some nine miles from central Paris, prosecutors in neighboring Bobigny CNN said. The prosecutor confirmed how long it took to prepare his sandwich.
Employees called the police after the waiter was shot with a pistol on his shoulder, AFP News Agency Kellner died at the scene. The police have opened a murder investigation, and the suspect is still on the run, according to the prosecution.
Residents expressed shock at the incident.
"He was killed for a sandwich?" said one AFP.
"It's sad," said a 29-year-old woman AFP. "It's a quiet restaurant, no problem, it was opened just a few months ago."
However, the area is known for high levels of crime, including drug trafficking and public drunkenness, according to AFP.
Disadvantaged Parisian suburbs, known as "banlieues", have suffered for years from political neglect and frequent neglect by police.
Social media rumors of child abduction by members of the Roma ethnic minority in France sparked a wave of violence in March, although the authorities rejected the allegations as unfounded.
In Bobigny and Clichy-sous, Roma were attacked -Bois, another suburb northeast of Paris, as well as Nanterre and Colombes.
