Park Authority: Sea turtles probably stranded when painted, abused

Two sea turtles, whose painted and abused carcasses called out in the social media, are probably dead when they were washed ashore and before they were abused, said the Israel Nature and Parks Authority on Saturday.

Images of the dead turtles were posted on Facebook by a Beach Preservation Activist on Friday and quickly shared among other users, causing indignation.

Hebrew media reports said that stones were found near the turtles and painted with red paint. This raised fears that the animals on Betzet Beach south of Rosh Hanikra in northern Israel had been stoned border with Lebanon.

"Regrettably, every year about 300 sea turtles are flushed to Israeli beaches after being dumped by sea, fishing nets, hooks, boat engines, and other things," the statement said. "Most are fished dead and the living … are brought to treatment at the INPA Sea Turtle Rescue Center."

Nonetheless, the Nature and Parks Authority noted the severity of the attack on wild animals, whether dead or alive.

Betzet Beach is one of the places along Israel's coast where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. Both loggerhead sea turtle and green sea turtles populate the Mediterranean, with both species laying their eggs along the Israeli coast.

Times of Israel contributors contributed to this report.
