Patriots Mailbag: Could help come from the training squad? | New England Patriots

The New England Patriots describe their match of the 17th Week against the New York Jets repeatedly as a playoff game. That seems a bit over the top.

Sure, the Patriots are playing for a farewell to the first round, but that does not affect the finals, unless they think they can not reach the postseason without the first round.

Regardless, if the Patriots can not defeat the jets at the Gillette Stadium, leaving in the first round is the least worrying.

Let's get into this week's mailing.

Why is Hollister in this squad?

After Jacob Hollister has withdrawn the injury protocol and another thigh injury, I like Mark Daniels from the Providence Journal threw in the locker room Thursday: What if the patriots put Hollister in the injured reserve and Stephen Anderson from the exercise squad had signed?

The patriots need more reception production from the narrow end position. Anderson is about the size of Hollister. Last season, he had caught 25 passes for 342 yards with a touchdown at the Houston Texans.

Anderson was in the practice group most of the time, so the patriots must like him and they could use all the threats they can get now.

They have also recently shown a willingness to remove a player from their practice cadre and make him an immediate contributor. They signed the defensive end of Ufomba Kamalu last week and made him active for defeating the Buffalo Bills.

Is the defense / running game able to carry Brady into the Super Bowl like the Denver in Peyton Manning's last season?
– @AndrewMalky
No, I do not think so. Both the Patriots' attack and their defense as a whole were simply too contradictory this season. I do not trust that both will be good enough in the postseason to lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl win.

Therefore Tom Brady has to pick up his game next month. Brady definitely has to do with some kind of injury. The key to the success of Patriots after the season is to defeat the New York Jets on Sunday and get the first round. I'll bet Brady looks like another player after a week's break.

If the Patriots can not beat the jets this weekend, hope for success after the season is lost.

What would potential extensions look like when Brady and DMC entered their business in recent years? Easy way to unlock the lid. Are you worried that Tom might not get an extension? #maildoug
– @thepaulswanson
Brady's cap was $ 27 million in 2019 and Devin McCourty $ 13.435 million. Ideally, the Patriots would work out an extension with Brady to lower the hit rate and keep him under contract after 2019, assuming he still wants to play.

The McCourty situation is a bit more chaotic. I think he has to agree to a pay cut to stay. In the next season he is the third highest paid security in the NFL. I can not imagine that the Patriots want to pay him so, even though he had a solid season.

Are you filling in 2019 or are you making supplies to younger players?
– @JBoss_
I think Bill Belichick is doing what he's trying to do every year – a combination of both. The Patriots will try their luck in the draft, but if he can find useful veterans in rookie contracts through trades or as a middle-class representative as a free agent, he will also add them.

The Patriots can not complete a full rebuild until Brady is no longer Quarterback.

What is the future at the TE position? Gronk slows down, Allen is fine, but the hit is big, Hollister can not stay in the field. Looks like there's going to be a double jump in the draft or a free agency … ..a goal or forecast.
– @CynicalPatsFan
When Rob Gronkowski retires, I could try signing Jared Cook and narrowly choosing the 2019 NFL Draft. It seems like a good year to come to a close.

If Gronkowski does not retire, they could probably come to a close end.

What do you think in his limited action by Derek Rivers? A young player who has a tough first year without injury or just a slower development path than others? #MailDoug
– @ BryanThiel_88
First of all, I believe the expectations of Rivers were always too high. He was a third round, but was treated like a first or second round because he was the first player selected by the Patriots in the 2017 NFL Draft.

That being said, he was a disappointment. It is not a good sign that the Patriots signed Kamalu from their exercise squad last week, and he immediately became active on Rivers. The Patriots must hope that Rivers makes progress in his third season. He will definitely be in the ranking next summer.

Let's make a quick fire.

Doug, can you add me to PS4? #MailDoug
– @PatPokemon
I can not. I do not have PS4. I'm not a big player.

Do you think that Tom Brady is good?
– @DeeepThreat
In the last 10 quarters? Not really. Everything this season yes.

The Patriots must hope that Brady is one. injured and b. can get well through the sub-round.

#FIREMARVINLEWIS?
– @ TWhiteguy2
Yes, but five years ago.

Will the Patriots Make a Qb or a Deal for Carson Wentz / Nick Foles?
– @arturoelnegro_
I do not think the Adler Wentz will act, and Nick Foles will do so too much.

Are you the successor of Tom Brady
– @ michaelis4real
You do not want that.

What did Harambe get for Christmas?
– @itsbeccawolf
A scratching pad, some goodies and some toys. He was a good boy this year.

BB does not usually make the same mistake twice. People can say what they want, but I think Brady's performance has dropped slightly this year. LIGHT. BB made a mistake with Gronk, got a first. in any scenario where he raises Brady for a storm? #maildoug
– @LemeryATC
I do not think Bill Belichick made a mistake with Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski threatened to resign if he was traded. Belichick's hands were tied.

It would not make sense to trade Brady for less than two rounds in the first round, and I can not see a team giving up so much.

Is it always good to see you?
– @_AndrewCallahan
Always.

Pineapple on pizza? #MailDoug
– @Mpls_Scott
Yes. Sorry for those who believe that this is blasphemy.

@DougKyed Do you think there is a chance that Pats will be waiting for Justin Herbert in 2020, or will they sign the successor to TB12 in the 2019 draft? # MailDoug
– @Proudred_devil [19659007] I think the Patriots have to draw a quarterback in this upcoming draft. I thought so nine months ago.

When will we get our first blizzard? We are almost in January. #MailDoug
– @Kid_From_Quincy
I had a staircase built from the road to my house to help navigate the snow this year. If that does not cost snow all winter, I suppose.

What's more a Christmas dinner? Spiral ham or lasagna? #MailDoug
– @ejlinehan
Spiral ham.

What is your opinion on the Pats pursuing a Tyrell Williams or Chris Conley as a free agency? Both guys are in disgrace / performance and maybe a bit cheap. Both are 6 & 3 "+ and could be a decent 3rd / 4th option. How would you deal with the WR requirement?
– @PatriotPrice
I think both will be more expensive than they are worth. I like both players, but wide receivers are paid in the open market.

My dad wants to know if you believe patriots are one and did this postseason.
– @pereira_report

Why are you the GOAT
– @JaylenSZN
I was born this way.

I really want to know how often the McCourtys try to fool the various regulars who are looking for interviews with one of them. Follow-up: How did you know that?
– @TinyFezzik
We are too smart for that. They just look different.

@DougKyed If you never want to leave Foxboro, is the second seed a blessing in disguise, as you most likely will not have to beat either the Chargers or the Chiefs? #MailDoug
– @FetzerValves
The Patriots were so bad on the street, the risk is not worth it. Seed # 1 is better, but the patriots do not get it anyway.

Po-tay-to or po-tah-to
– @ bruinsgirl33
The former. Who says the latter?

Which WR from the free agent class would you most like to see in a Pats uniform?
