Patriots Mailbag: How did Rookie Cornerback JC Jackson undrafting go? | New England Patriots

For four days, New England Patriots players and coaches have been asked countless times why they fight the dolphins in Miami.

Nobody has a clear answer. But safety Devin McCourty summed it up best.

"We just sucked," McCourty said.

The Patriots have lost four of their last five games in Miami. They will try to make the last four out of the last six Sundays when traveling to Miami to fight the Dolphins.

Let's get into this week's mailing.

JC Jackson. If he's as good as his teammates say, why was not he hired? Maryland is not a tiny school. Is he the real deal (that's a bargain)?

The reasons why JC Jackson was undone were not linked to football. He was arrested and eventually not convicted of armed robbery in 2015.

That's why he graduated from the University of Florida, spent a season at Riverside Community College and was eventually transferred to the University of Maryland.

Without these legal questions, Jackson would certainly have been formulated. If his career in Florida had not been impressed, it would not be out of the way for him to be drafted as high as his former Gators team-mate Duke Dawson, who was in the second round of the Patriots in 2018.

Last season, at the Terrapins, Jackson allowed 35 catches on 61 goals for 414 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions, Pro Football Focus said.

He drove a 4.46-second, 40-yard stroke with a 6.92-second, 3-drill bit, so he's definitely athletic. He was selected by NFL Draft Scout and NFL.com from a fourth to sixth round before being finally undone.

So is he the real deal? His teammates certainly believe this. Jason McCourty, Stephon Gilmore and Duron Harmon love him. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had nothing good to report. He actually started fighting Gilmore in the spring.

Personally, I stand high on him. As long as he can stay out of trouble, I think he could start next season as a starting corner for the Patriots.

So you think that radar defense would be one thing from now on? I remember seeing a lot of this last game and it worked.
– @celo_aragao
Celo refers to the defensive looks as the Patriots only had a down-lineman and then a group of linebackers and defenders had the line of attacks to disguise the coverings against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Patriots showed that Sunday looked common. They will probably do it again before the end of the season, but I would only expect them to use it sporadically.

A Super Bowl birth this season would be one of the most impressive in the Patriots dynasty, looking back at the fluctuations of the roster and a highly competitive AFC in 2011. The secondary education of the Patriots was so bad that Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater played the defense this season. Only nine Patriots defenders have played 20 or more snapshots this season – Devin McCourty, Jason McCourty, Gilmore, Harmon, Patrick Chung, Jonathan Jones, Jackson, Eric Rowe and Obi Melifonwu.

Fifteen defenders played 20 or more snapshots in 2011 – Kyle Arrington, Devin McCourty, James Ihedigbo, Chung, Sergio Brown, Antwaun Molden, Sterling Moore, Nathan Jones, Leigh Bodden, Phillip Adams, Slater, Ras- Ich Dowling, Edelman and Ross Ventrone.

Annnnnd I just found a rabbit hole when I watched Slater play safety in 2011. He was not bad!

#MailDoug Why do not the Pats use Donte Hightower as a marginal breaker? It is a need and he is obviously slow in reporting.
– @joey_zakrzewski
I do not think Hightower was bad this season. He looks a step slower, but Hightower has never really mastered the Downfield. He is still good at running out of the apartment and stopping him for a short time. Hightower is better a speed camera than a full-time edge breaker. Hightower's pass-rush snaps have risen in recent weeks, and his play has definitely improved over the course of the season.

Weighing the history of the Patriots because they are not ready to pay market value to out-of-bounds, and Trey Flowers is exactly what Belichick wants in a fringe defender, believe the Pats give him one really competitive offer him next season in the city? #MailDoug
– @CramarSports
I think they will. That does not guarantee that they will lock him up because another team might end up paying too much. But the patriots have the necessary cap-room to sign Flowers, and they have no one in their current squad who can adequately play their valuable role. You know that Flowers will arouse great interest in the open market, and I would expect them to make him a competitive offer.

@DougKyed Do you think that Obi's snapshots will increase in the coming weeks? #maildoug
– @yirt
It would not surprise me if the patriots started to count more and more on Obi Melifonwu to cover the tight ends. The Patriots have struggled to overcome tight ends and backs this season. When Melifonwu starts covering more tight ends, Patrick Chung could focus more on running his back.

The patriots seem to like Melifonwu. He has played more than I expected.

Let's make a quick fire.

Will the Patriots actually throw the ball in the first trimester Sunday?
– @ michaelis4real
That depends on the Dolphins coverage, but I would say yes.

Should the patriots draw a TE in the draft?
– @ Neauxmad98
Yes. Absolute.

What do you want for Christmas? #maildoug
– @PatsFanPJ
Maybe a warm pair of socks or something.

Who is the "Nate Eovaldi" of the Patriots? The guy who does something that actually keeps his teammates in awe.
– @ plarkin88
Honestly, teammates seem to be impressed by Jackson's ability to go deep.

What happened to TB times? Biggest journalistic undertaking of this century. #MailDoug
– @BradRWallace
That's a question for my buddy Charlotte Wilder.

Who is expected to leave before the next season? Gronk, Brady, Josh or Bill
– @LegionOfDudes_
Tough one. It would be either Josh McDaniels or Rob Gronkowski. I'll go on a limb and tell Gronkowski.

Who is your favorite player you want to talk to in the locker room or the current player
– @Austin_Whittel
? There are many good people to talk to in the locker room. Duron Harmon, Julian Edelman, Ted Karras and Elandon Roberts first come to my mind. For former patriots, I've always liked talking to Logan Ryan.

Will we ever get a game called "The Gordon Show", and if so, what game will it take? #maildoug
– @ jessgabe8
It could be this week if Xavien Howard does not play. The Dolphins may be forced to use rookie cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick at Gordon.

Bigger design needs: TE or QB?
– @pereira_report
Big question. The end may be closer, but quarterback is probably even bigger.

When they hid behind the wall and fired at the approaching soldiers, did they "reload" their muskets or was a replacement loaded?
– @JCDWorld
I think they reloaded it I do not think there was enough Muskets for spare parts for every soldier.

My daughter was born a month ago. When do I start sleeping again? Her name is Olivia, the best name ever. #MailDoug
– @ gcabreu87
My daughter sleeps over 10 hours a night and I still do not sleep enough. That could be a problem for me though.

That got me confused for a while, but do you think there's a reason why Hollister stayed in the active squad even though he hurt himself for a few games? Would you like to make him a reliable TE when Gronk is on the road? Dude is doing well on the field by the way. I only wonder
– @ Zeekee21
It's nothing more complicated than the team likes him. Bill Belichick, the head coach of the Patriots, mentioned him in the same week with Jackson and Malcolm Butler among the impartial free agents.

Adam Vinatieri is withdrawn
– @ LFNJSinner
I doubt it. But he is a fan of the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Will Phil Dorsett be hired for a Pats career like Amendola, where he will later emerge as a clutch target after some ambiguity? Or does the team have any long-term plans for him?
– @Jamptroll
Dorsett is in the final year of his contract, so he would have to re-sign first for this to happen.
