The mayor of the Polish city of Danzig died a day in the hospital after being stabbed to a charity event.
53-year-old Pawel Adamowicz was attacked on Sunday in front of hundreds of people on stage.
He was hospitalized for serious abdominal injuries and operated for five hours.
A 27-year-old with a criminal record was arrested for the robbery. Police believe he used a media pass to gain access to the stage.
Local television shows showed the suspect recently released from prison, wielding a gun and screaming.
According to reports, he said, "Adamowicz is dead," claiming he was tortured behind bars.
Poland's Health Minister confirmed on Monday that Adamowicz had died from his injuries.
"We could not win," said Lukasz Szumowski to the local media.
Adamowicz came from Gdansk and was mayor of the city for 20 years.
