Phillies trade for infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and send Mets Double-A pitcher

The Phillies have agreed to acquire infield Asdrubal Cabrera from the Mets for Double-A right-handed pitcher, the clubs announced early Friday night.

Cabrera, 32, hits .277 / .329 / .488 (124 OPS +) this season with 23 doubles, 18 homers, 58 RBI and 48 runs. In many ways, this is the best offensive season of his career. He has mostly played shortstop in his career, but can also handle the second or third base.

In all likelihood, the Phillies want him short. Maikel Franco is currently in flames and has to stay in third place in the daily setup. Cesar Hernandez is also pretty well buried on second base.

Shortstop is usually a combination of Youngster J.P. Crawford and Scott Kingery. Phillies shortstops have been an offensive black hole this season, with a .232 / .279 / .348. Cabrera obviously represents a significant improvement in the offensive.

But defense could be a problem. Cabrera has not had a long range and is now north of 30 years. Last season, in just 386 innings at shortstop, he scored a negative 8 in defensive rounds.

On the other hand, Kingery is in this season's 608 innings at minus 5 in the same statistic, so it's not as if Cabrera means they take a big step back. It is probably not an improvement of the defense. However, they will gladly take the offense.

In addition, Cabrera is a switch hitter, so he can slip easily for managers Gabe Kapler anywhere in the lineup.

The Phillies will start on Friday with a 2 1

/2 lead in the NL East.

Regarding the return, Kilome, 23, is in Double-A. For the Reading Fightin 'Phils this season he was 4-6 with a 4.24 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 83 strikeouts in 102 innings. Walks were a problem since he offered 51.
