Who is David Matthews?

Matthews, the son of a miner, worked his way up from mechanic to racer. After a terrible crash at the British circuit Silverstone in 1973, he retired and poured his forces into his dealership, which he sold in 1991 in favor of real estate development.

He bought and rehabilitated the Eden Roc Hotel on the Caribbean island of St. Barth, and finally built it into a glittering, celebrity-friendly hangout. In September 2017, the resort suffered significant damage during Hurricane Irma.

He and his second wife, the Zimbabwean-born Jane Parker (whom he married in the 1970s), share their time between their two British properties: Caunton Manor, a 30-acre spread in Nottinghamshire, and Glen Affric, a 100,000 acre property in Scotland.

Her eldest son James, 42, followed David into the racing business before moving to securities trading. He married Middleton, 34, in a lavish ceremony in May 2017, attended by her older sister, Duchess Kate of Cambridge and her husband Prince William, his brother Prince Harry and his future fiancee, American actress Meghan Markle. Will and Kate's children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, served in the ceremony as a page boy and flower girl.

Due to the hour when the story broke, Kensington Palace, representing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, did not respond immediately to USA TODAY's request for comment.
