Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released an announcement after the announcement.
"Ben Roethlisberger had an MRI on his right elbow on Sunday night and the Steelers medical team determined that surgery would be needed," Tomlin said. "We expect the operation to be scheduled for this week. He is placed on our reserve / injury list and is out of action for the season. "
Ben left the game on Sunday after showing visible complaints with his limb against Seattle in the first half. Mason Rudolph came into play for Big Ben, who had the opportunity to lead the offensive for almost a full season.
