Pixel 4: 6 Things Google Must Do to Beat the iPhone 11 and Galaxy S10

The Pixel 3 from the year 2018.

5 Google will officially unveil the pixels 4 and 4 XL . This is Google's opportunity to take the lead, especially since Apple has disposed of its iPhone 11 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max for 2019 and Samsung's sales are well on its way to millions of versions of the phones Galaxy S10 and Note 10 Plus .

Since Pixel 4 represents Google's ultimate version of its Android operating system, which is also the most popular operating system in the world the phone must stand above its competitors. However, the competition is huge: The iPhone 11 has a superb camera with a new ultra-wide-angle lens and the S10 is equipped with useful features such as a long battery life and the loading of two materials.

If we know everything we know about the iPhone 11 and the Galaxy S10, as well as the information that Google released about its launch on the Pixel 4, we'd better know what the company needs to do for its next flagship competitive to stay and to be ahead of the curve. These are the features Pixel 4 must have to be a hit.

Google spilled the beans on Pixel 4

Better night vision

One of the most compelling features of Pixel 3 is the night vision mode. At the time, the camera mode felt a bit like magic – he was able to lighten some of the darkest and darkest scenes I've tested and take clear photos.

While it remains impressive, other phone manufacturers have since started to catch up. The OnePlus 7 Pro has its own Nightscape mode, which sometimes captures images in low-light conditions better than pixels. Apple also entered the game and added Night Mode to their iPhone 11 trio. While we have not compared it with the Pixel 3 side by side, the night mode of the iPhone 11 makes so far impressive pictures. If Google Night Sight does not improve, it will be part of the status quo instead of the current situation. We know from the official Google images that the Pixel 4 has multiple rear view cameras. Maybe the new Setup Night Sight improves even more.

Better video recording

As mentioned above, we love the handling of photos with the Pixel 3 and it is the best all-round camera for photos. But when it comes to videos, the pixel is missing. During our video shootouts between the Pixel 3 and the iPhone XR and XS Apple's iPhones went unrestricted.

In low-light conditions, the Pixel 3 did not retain the focus, and the transitions between different types of exposure were not as uniform. This means that videos taken in the dark, for example in a bar or at a concert, look much better on the iPhone. Pixel 3's fused video stabilization system can look surreal and dramatic, which is not exactly a big problem, but the slight Jell-O-like effect as the camera moves can look unnatural.

For slow motion shots, the Pixel 3 can only record in 720p and 4K videos at 30 fps. However, the iPhones can record slow motion in 1080p (to make the video sharper) and 4K video to 60fps (which is smoother). And while all three phones record in stereo, we found that the sound on the two iPhones was richer and fuller.

If pixel 4 is to remain competitive with the iPhone, it needs to raise its own bar for video recording. This means improving audio quality and low-light shooting, and improving resolution and frame rate options.

Google provides unlimited storage for Google Photos in original resolution for pixel owners. However, Pixel 4 should have more internal memory. Last year's pixel phones were only available in 64GB and 128GB without any expansion. In a time when there are so many popular, graphics-intensive games and apps and people are recording tons of photos and videos (sometimes in 4K!), More on-board memory is not just a good advantage, but a necessity. Especially since it is not fun for everyone to save their content in a digital cloud.

Angela Lang / CNET

The Pixel 4 is not the only phone that could benefit from it. CNET colleague Eli Blumenthal believes that Apple should abandon a 64GB iPhone : "128GB is not just the standard among iPhone 11 and 11 Pro rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S10 ] and note 10 lines or the OnePlus 7 Pro but the higher capacity is the basis for cheaper mid-range devices $ 450 from 128 GB. "[19659007] If Google insists on being as competitive as Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola, it's time to either increase Pixel 4's memory or add expandable storage.

Secure & # 39; Face ID & # 39;

Although Google has advertised Pixel 4's face recognition tool in an advertisement we do not know much about what the feature is capable of. However, if Google wants to compete with Apple's Face ID the feature must be private and secure. This is because Face ID can authorize digital payments, which is not very common despite the fact that many Android phones have some form of facial scanning. We hope that Google not only unlocks the home screen of your phone, but is also secure enough to be used for payments.

Long Battery Life Compared to the Galaxy S10

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL last year took an average of 15 hours, 16 hours, and 49 minutes, respectively, in our battery tests for continuous video playback in airplane mode. While these are objectively large numbers and both phones can easily survive a full day's work without charging, Galaxy phones often surpass their competitors in terms of battery life.

This time the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 Plus were in operation at 18 and 21 o'clock, respectively. All this juice is useful if you're out and about with your phone all day without a charger – and handy if the Galaxy phones charge other accessories directly. We're not saying that the Pixel 4 needs charging on both sides, but a fantastic battery life would make it even more competitive.

Affordable or More Competitive Trade-in

At the start, Pixel 3 launched at $ 799, £ 739 and $ 1,199 and the Pixel 3 XL costs $ 899, £ 869 and $ 1,349. If Google rates it similarly, the Pixel 4 is cheaper than the iPhone 11 Pro for $ 999 and the Galaxy S10 for $ 900. Both Apple and Samsung now have cheaper phones in the same family: the iPhone 11 costs $ 699 and the Galaxy S10E $ 750.

Google has a midrange line that was introduced this year. The Pixel 3A costs 399 US dollars and the 3 XL 479 US dollars – much less than all the aforementioned mobile phones. But if people want something new and affordable, it's stubborn for Google to keep us waiting for the (supposed) Pixel 4A until next year. A better strategy would be to make Pixel 4 more affordable.

If this is not possible, an aggressive exchange policy with its online shop and carrier partners is a viable solution. In addition to the various available discount and gift card offers for the iPhone 11 for example, the US mobile operator T-Mobile offers its current customers half of the iPhone 11 . Verizon customers can save up to $ 700 on a trade-in, and Apple offers up to [$ $ 600 if you submit an older device .

Google has a pixel phone adoption program, but you can not get back more than $ 400. If that were not enough, the competing mobile phone maker Samsung has returned the full amount of money when you trade a pixel for a Galaxy. Yikes.
