Last year, Google created a strong precedent for its Pixel phones by extending a third major update, Android 10, to the original Pixel and Pixel XL. Today we confirmed that Android 11 will be the last update for Pixel 2.
At first, Google only promised that its Pixel phones would receive two important updates, which means that the original Pixel phones on Android Pie should have reached the end of their lives. Last year Google “at popular request” expanded Pixel and Pixel XL to Android 10 to breathe a last piece of life into the cell phones of 2016.
Similarly, Pixel 2 is included as one of the Android Beta compatible devices this year, and Pixel 2 owners will get the full Android 1
We now believe that the Android 11 update will be Pixel 2’s third and last major update, with no additional support planned. This emerges from a developer comment in the Android Open Source project. In the comment, which also includes our first mention of Pixel 5a from 2021, the Google developer expressly states that “support for Pixel 2 is being discontinued”.
In this case, Pixel 2/2 XL owners can probably expect a similar experience to the original Pixel and Pixel XL, with only one or two final security updates after Android 11 launches before being finally discontinued later this year.
In the same comment, the developer contains a list of almost all published and unpublished Pixel devices, as well as the Android version he launched – or will start – With. We learn from the list that the Pixel 4a actually starts with Android 10, not Android 11, as some hoped.
Based on this, we believe Pixel 4a will be updated by August 2023, meaning that it may reach the end of support a few months before Android 14 launches for 2023. However, it is still too early to finally speculate on Google’s update schedule for mid-range devices.
When Google’s 2020 pixel lineup seems a bit overwhelming or confusing, our Stephen Hall has broken down and simplified what to expect from the next three phones and who they are made for. This can also serve as a fantastic speculative buying guide for owners of the phone soon retired Pixel 2.
Pixel 2 owners, are you planning to upgrade to a different Pixel phone or brand this year? Let us know in the comments.
