The five-point scale of the coronavirus risk
The UK government rolled out the five-tier coronavirus threat level in the first half of May, along with the plan then put forward to gradually lift the restrictions put in place to contain the epidemic. When this scale was introduced, the UK was at the fourth level. The threat was lowered to level three on June 19.
– The raise in alert announced by the UK medical chiefs reflects a significant change in the threat the coronavirus poses today as the country is now at a crucial moment in terms of response and everyone must now do their part to prevent the spread of the Curb virus and save lives, Health Secretary Matt Hancock commented.
On the previous Monday, England’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty and chief scientific advisor to the government, Patrick Vallance, warned that the number of new infections would rise from 4,000 to 4,500 a day to 50,000 by mid-October if no action was taken.
Johnson is expected to announce further action plans to fight the epidemic on Tuesday, and it is almost certain that contacts between people from different households and pub and restaurant hours will be restricted.
