United Kingdom and Gibraltar European Union membership referendum. Boris Johnson in Luxembourg. Protests and canceled participation in the conference

Boris Johnson arrived in Luxembourg on Monday, where he was greeted by a group of Brexit opponents. Among other things, they sang: "Fascist!" and "shame on you, Boris." Following protests, the British Prime Minister withdrew from a press conference with Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.

At the beginning of his visit to Luxembourg, Boris Johnson met Jean-Claude Juncker. It was the first direct conversation between the President of the European Commission and the British Prime Minister since Johnson became head of government in July. They met for a working lunch in one of the restaurants in the capital of the Grand Duchy. Talking about the Brexit, however, brought no breakthrough.

Difficult day

The visit of the British Prime Minister to Luxembourg did not go smoothly. A group of demonstrators waited for him before entering the restaurant. According to Reuters, many retired Britons lived in Luxembourg among the demonstrators. The British Prime Minister was greeted with humming and shouting.

He did not appear at the conference

Another point of Johnson's visit was a meeting with the Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. Here he was also accompanied by protests. Protesters sang: "Fascist!", "Stop the coup! Tell the truth!", "Shame on you, Boris." The speakers heard "Ode to Joy" or "I can not be satisfied".

Following a meeting with the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Johnson was scheduled to attend a press conference with him and meet foreign media journalists. He did not appear, however, and Xavier Bettel appeared alone beside the empty lectern designed for the British Prime Minister.

Bettel accused Johnson of not presenting any serious ideas about the British leaving the European Union. – We need a written proposal. The clock is ticking, so you have to stop talking and start working – he said. He appealed to the British Prime Minister not to accuse Brussels.

In a conversation with British journalists, Johnson admitted that he had broken off the conference due to protests. – It would not be fair to the Luxembourg Prime Minister – he said. He added that at the meeting with journalists he expected "a lot of noise" that would drown out the words of the leaders.

According to the BBC, British officials asked the Luxembourg side to organize a conference in the building, but their request was not met.

Less and less time

Britain was to leave the European Union on October 31st. However, the country has been in political dead end for months regarding the conditions for leaving the Community. A referendum on Brexit took place in 2016.
