ATLANTA (AP) – A man fatally kills a teenager accidentally knocked on the wrong door in Atlanta, a TV station reported.
It happened at 12:30 in The Retreat apartment complex in Southwest Atlanta, according to WSB-TV.
The 19-year-old Omarian Banks was deposed by a Lyft near the wrong Briseway of the complex, the television station quoted the police. Banks and his girlfriend had just moved into the complex and Banks did not know the area, police said. Banks used FaceTime to talk to his girlfriend when he knocked on the door he thought was his. He left shortly afterwards.
The man inside, Darryl Bynes, 32, grabbed a gun and went to his balcony to confront Banks, police said. They said after a brief conversation that Bynes had shot him. The police said Bynes told them he shot Banks in self-defense.
Family friend Michael Wallace described Banks as a hard-working man who did not bother anyone.
"This is a 19-year-old kid who did not even deserve to die, that has not even lived his life," Wallace told the WSB.
Bynes is charged with murder. The TV station did not say if he had a lawyer.
Makayla Johnson, who identified himself as Bynes's cousin, told the WSB that the charges were unfair.
"He is an innocent father," Johnson said. "He has five kids … his car was stolen earlier this week and right now he's just trying to protect his family."
